COURSES FOR STUDENTS DISPLACED BY
HURRICANE KATRINA

We have received numerous requests from students and their parents who are trying to find a way to continue their educations under very difficult circumstances. Our great hope is that our sister institutions affected by the hurricane will be able to recover and reopen soon. But in the meantime, we will do everything we can to help their students.

NORTH CAROLINA RESIDENTS

Applying for Temporary Enrollment

The University will enable undergraduate students who are residents of North Carolina and currently enrolled in a school closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina to enroll temporarily at the University. The students may take courses at UNC-Chapel Hill on a space-available basis, and the University will provide them with a transcript when they return to their home campuses.

Alternatively, students may choose to enroll in our online and self-paced courses described below.

To take advantage of this temporary enrollment option, students must:

  • Be residents of North Carolina.
  • Complete the Emergency Request for Temporary Enrollment Form and Residency Application.
  • Submit proof of enrollment at one of the closed colleges or universities. This may include a photocopy of a student photo ID, tuition invoice, or cancelled check.
  • Submit this information to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (919) 966-3621 as soon as possible, and preferably no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, September 7. You may drop it off at our office or fax us a copy at (919) 962-3045; if you fax us a copy, please also send the original by mail or bring it when you come to campus to complete registration. Because classes are already underway, students should arrange to begin classes as quickly as possible, and in any event no later than the end of the day on Monday, September 12.
  • Come to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on September 6 or September 7, from 10 am to 5:00 pm, to register for courses, find housing, and finalize enrollment. If you cannot visit on those dates, we urge you to come to campus to complete your registration as quickly as possible thereafter, since students enrolling temporarily will need to begin attending classes no later than Monday, September 12. See Advising and Registration below.

Financial Aid

The UNC Board of Governors passed a resolution that waives Fall 2005 tuition and mandatory fees for students who meet the following criteria:

  1. The student is or was enrolled for the 2005 fall semester in an
institution of higher education that is closed for the entire semester due
    to Hurricane Katrina; and
  2. The student is an undergraduate, graduate, or professional school
student who has been admitted to a UNC constituent institution based
upon academic criteria and available institutional capacity and
    resources.

Additionally, in keeping with special accommodations made at the federal level for these students, North Carolina residents who meet the above criteria and who are otherwise eligible may qualify for state need-based financial aid for the 2005 fall term, even if they are classified as visiting or special students. Read the full resolution.
