| When do I register for classes and
how do I plan my curriculum?
First-year students register for classes on the second day of C-TOPS,
a two day orientation session that takes place over the summer before
classes begin. After you have registered, an
academic advisor will review your course selection and answer any
questions you have about your fall schedule. Upon leaving C-TOPS, registration
will be closed until the ADD/DROP period in late August, when you will
be able to modify your schedule using Student
Central.
Academic Advising sends
all admitted transfer students an advising packet within a few weeks of their
admission. This packet outlines the registration process for transfers, who are
able to register as soon as it is received. If more than two weeks time has passed
since receiving your admit letter, and you have not received this packet, please contact
Advising.

| What steps should I take to ensure that enrollment goes as smoothly
as possible??
As always, it's of the utmost importance that we have your most up-to-date
contact information so that we can communicate all the important and
exciting information you'll need about enrolling. Please verify and
update your contact information as necessary on Your
UNC Homepage.
You'll receive a package of information with your admission letter that details
all of the steps you need to take between admission notification and
when you arrive on campus. Please read it carefully. Most questions
and concerns you may have will be addressed in that package which serves
as a guide to confirming your place here at Carolina.
Here are some items to pay special attention to:
- Send us your reply form and enrollment deposit - Postmark your enrollment deposit and completed reply form no later than the reply deadline indicated on our admission offer letter.
- Apply for campus housing - If you wish to apply for campus housing, complete the online housing application as soon as possible and no later than the deadline indicated in the materials. You may complete the housing application form immediately; you do not have to wait until your enrollment and housing deposits have been received. If you have been admitted after the housing application deadline, complete the online housing application and send your housing application fee immediately.
If you are a transfer student, we recommend that you concurrently pursue off-campus housing alternative, since transfer housing requests are only considered after all incoming first-year students have been accommodated.
- Apply for financial aid - The appropriate forms must be received by our Office
of Scholarships and Student Aid by March 1 for you to be considered for
need-based financial aid.
- Keep your grades high - Our offer of admissions is contingent on your continuing to perform at the level that enabled us to offer you admission. We therefore require a final transcript form to be sent to us by the deadline indicated in your admission package. If you are a first-year student, please give the enclosed Final Transcript form to your guidance counselor and ask him or her to postmark the form and your final transcript by the deadline. Transfers, please arrange to have your final transcript sent as soon as it becomes available. If your final transcript is not received before the deadline, you may not be able to complete enrollment at Carolina.
Again, the best way to ensure that this process is as smooth and stress-free as possible is to read the contents of your admission package and all other correspondence thoroughly.

May I defer my enrollment?
Applicants who have been offered admission may request a deferral for one academic year in order to work, travel, or pursue other extraordinary opportunities. Admitted applicants may also seek a one-year deferral for military service, required religious observance, or medical reasons. In seeking a deferral, admitted applicants agree not to enroll in any for-credit or degree-seeking course of study during their deferral year.
To request that we defer your admission, please write the Director of Admissions, Stephen Farmer, no later than July 1 of the year for which you have been admitted; if your deferral is granted, please write again by December 31 to confirm your enrollment.
Even if you are seeking a deferral, it is necessary for you to pay your enrollment deposit by the deadline indicated in your original admission letter and reply form. This enrollment deposit is nonrefundable and will automatically be applied towards your first-semester charges at the University. Application fees for University housing and registration fees for orientation typically are nonrefundable after May 1 and may not be carried over to the following academic year. Merit- and need-based aid awards are not transferable, and reapplication for scholarship and student aid funds is required each year.
Deferrals are considered on a case-by-case basis and are not automatically granted. In making your written request, please explain in detail your reasons for seeking a deferral and your plans for the deferral year. Because undergraduate students, with very few exceptions, begin their enrollment at the University in the fall, the deferral request should be for one full academic year.
Please address all correspondence regarding deferrals to Mr. Stephen Farmer, Assistant Provost and Director of Undergraduate Admissions, CB 2200 – Jackson Hall, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-2200. Mr. Farmer and the admissions committee will review your request and respond in writing.

| I have dropped or changed a course
since being admitted. Is this a big deal? What should I do?
If your course schedule should change in any way after applying, including after being admitted, you must immediately notify us in writing. Since our decisions are made conditionally upon your completion of the schedule you provided when submitting your application, a change in course schedule may impact your admissions decision.

| When is orientation
(C-TOPS/TSOPS/WOW) and what happens there? Is there anything I should
bring?
Orientation is an on-going process designed to assist you in making a successful transition to college life at Carolina, whether you're a first-year or transfer student. It involves Summer Orientation (C-TOPS for first-year or TSOP for transfer students), Week of Welcome (WOW), and much more.
At Orientation, you'll learn about what college courses are like at
Carolina, what student life is all about, what services are available
to assist you, and what unique opportunities exist to help you broaden
your experience. You will learn how to take full advantage of all that
Carolina has to offer both inside and outside the classroom.
You'll
also experience what it is like to register for Carolina courses, familiarize
yourself with technology for your courses, live in the residence halls
on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, eat your meals in Lenoir Hall, participate
in student activities, and walk across campus.
Carolina also offers additional special-interest orientation programs
in outdoor adventure and community service. No matter which orientation
program you choose, we encourage you to use this opportunity to get
to know faculty, staff and your fellow students. Most important of
all, have fun!
There are 12 C-TOPS sessions and two TSOP sessions
throughout the months of June and July. For specific information about
orientation scheduling, please visit Carolina
Orientation.
