PLACEMENT
EXAMS
To ensure you are placed in the appropriate level math, English,
and foreign language courses, the following exam
scores and courses are used. For additional information, please
refer to: http://www.admissions.unc.edu/academics/placement.htm.
Math
During orientation, students are required to submit one
of the following to ensure they are placed in the
appropriate level math course:
- a math test score,
- an official college transcript reflecting any college
courses taken while in high school, or
- an official
college math course credit
evaluation form from the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions.
Accepted Math Tests
During orientation, students are required to submit a math test score or an official math credit evaluation form from the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level math course. Many majors at Carolina require a quantitative reasoning course that
you will not be allowed to enroll in without an appropriate placement score (e.g., math and natural sciences, business, health professional fields).
While the SAT Subject Test, Math 2 is typically used to determine
your math course placement, the following exam scores and courses
can alternatively be used to determine your placement and college
course credit:
- AP Calculus AB exam - if you scored a 3 or higher,
you will receive credit for Math 231 and may enroll in Math 232 if needed.
- AP Calculus BC exam - if you scored a 3 or higher,
you will get credit for both Math 231 and 232 and
may enroll in Math 233 if needed.
- AP Calculus AB or BC exam - if you scored a
2, you will not get credit for a calculus course,
but you will be exempted from Math 110.
- IB (HL) Math exam - if you scored a 5 or higher,
you will get credit for both Math 231 and 232 and
may enroll in Math 233 as needed.
- SAT Subject Test, Math 1 – this exam may
be taken instead of the Math 2 exam if you do not
want to take Math 231 as your first course at Carolina.
- AP Statistics exam -- if you scored a 3, you will get credit for Statistics (STOR) 151. If you scored a 4 or higher, you will get credit for Statistics (STOR) 155. Note: Credit for STOR 151 or 155 does not give you Math 110 placement.
- Dual enrollment – if you completed a dual
enrollment or other college math course with a
C or better, be sure to send your official transcript
to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as soon
as the transcript is available so that it can be
evaluated for credit before orientation.

Foreign Language
During orientation, you will take a University
placement exam in the foreign language you have studied
unless you have taken an SAT subject, AP, or IB language
test AND have evidence of your exam results with
you at orientation.
Even if you have transfer credit in a foreign language
course that you completed at another college, we
strongly recommend that you take a placement exam
in that language if you would like to continue to
the next level.
For a list of exams that can be used to determine
the course credits you will receive, visit our Placement
Examinations page. If you plan on continuing your
foreign language work, you will be placed into the
next course above the level for which credit is awarded.
If you have studied a language
other than French, German, Latin, and Spanish, you
should contact the language department to find out
about exams and placement.
