Watching the Skies

Heidi Schweiker
Physics and Astronomy
Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona
Site Manager, 0.9m telescope

Since graduation I've worked in astronomy at Kitt Peak National Observatory. I love working hands-on with telescopes and subsystems, fixing and improving the systems for optimal use. The knowledge I gained while obtaining my degree in physics helps me understand the science being done with the telescope and helps me determine what effect a system may have on the quality of the data collected.

To obtain a similar position, I'd say that a physics degree is key as well as being well grounded in astronomy. Hands-on experience with telescopes was important, and having the 24" telescope at Carolina was helpful. I'd also recommend getting involved in a research program at a national observatory.
