Mars in Utah

Do you want to study abroad while you are in college? Kate Harris does and in the spring she will be traveling to Mongolia to live in a yurt. But right now Kate is on Mars or at least the closest place to it on this planet. She is a member of Crew 11 on the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah.

Kate is a Canadian sophomore biology student attending the University of North Carolina on a Morehead Scholarship. One of the first things she did at Carolina was to establish SpaceTalk, a UNC student organization that advocates for the human exploration of Mars and space. This novel student initiated seminar series brings distinguished speakers, scientists, astronauts and other prominent figures in space-related fields to campus.

Kate's fascination with space, and Mars in particular, began in childhood and continues to motivate many of her interests and activities. Kate is currently spending two weeks as part of simulated Martian exploration team. Every activity, every experiment, every step outside the Habitat will be as it would be if the Crew were really on the Red Planet.

Kate is keeping a journal, complete with great pictures, of all the sights, sounds, and activities occurring while she is a part of the Mars Society's exploration of the fourth rock from the sun. You may keep up with all that is happening by linking to her website at http://www.genmars.com/desert
