On a Quest for Knowledge
Liz Veazey’s interests are taking her places.
An Environmental Science major, she spent summer 2002 with
the Manomet Conservation Science Center in Maine, studying
patches of trees left intact within clear-cut and partially
cut forests for retention of late sucessational species. In
spring 2002, Veazey and classmates from her Coral Reef Management
course went to the U.S. Virgin Islands. They studied coral
reef ecology, snorkeling in the rich biodiversity of the reefs
under the direction of Dr. Greg Gangi.
Veazey will go to New Zealand in 2003, thanks to a Morris
K. Udall Scholarship for up to $5,000. She will study conservation
and biodiversity with the School for International Training.
When not traveling or attending class, Veazey works in Dr.
Jeff Sekelsky’s genetics lab. She researches fly genes
orthologus to human genes, meaning that they have similar
DNA codes and similar functions. Veazey helps create and experiment
with flies that have deleted or mutated genes that repair
DNA breaks. This research could lead to new treatments or
a cure for certain cancers.
