What I Wish I Knew in 12th Grade
I would not trade my experiences at Rocky Mount Senior High for anything; every one of them was a unique opportunity to ground my core beliefs and to help solidify my resolve to succeed. I had friends who made me laugh, faculty and staff who cared. Although divorced since I was three, a parent who worked hard and always had time for everything that involved me. However, even with the plethora of people who cared for and loved me, there are some things that I failed to learn in the twelfth grade.
I wish I had learned to speed read. The value of effective reading in high school is highly underrated. In high school I found myself regularly rereading paragraphs and I dreaded book-reading assignments even if I really enjoyed the book once I read it. The first week of classes, I was inundated with reading assignments and I felt absolutely overwhelmed. I needed help and I needed it fast. Luckily, I chose Carolina, where from advisement to The Learning and Help Centers real help is around every corner. My Carolina resources effectively assessed my skills and offered me a speed reading/effective reading course that fit my schedule and ultimately put me on a course for success.
