Born in Oklahoma and raised a die-hard football fan, one might wonder how
I ever chose Carolina. Looking back, I can tell you that it was a tough decision.
I have never been good at making decisions, my family and friends can attest
to that. However, when I started looking at schools, the east coast was always
where I wanted to go. Whether it was the University’s history, the traditions,
or the closeness to the Atlantic Ocean, Carolina was always in my mind even
before I had the chance to step foot on its campus.
Even so, my freshman year I ended up staying in state. While I made a lot
of friends, and enjoyed campus, I still wondered what it would be like to
follow my dream and attend a school back east. With the help of my mother,
who told me that “40% of students change colleges, 40% of students change
majors at least once, and 40% of people have at least one major career change”,
I decided that I might as well give it a chance. I knew if I didn’t,
I would always keep wondering. So, I applied here as a sophomore transfer
student.
I can still remember the tour I took in the spring. The campus was covered
with pink leaves from the flowering trees and pedestrians filled the sidewalks
of Franklin Street. Yes, the town and university was exactly what I imagined
it would be like. Immediately after, I knew this was where I wanted to go.
However, once I returned home my indecisiveness took over again and I kept
wondering whether Carolina would be the right place for me. Truthfully, I
can tell you these feelings continued throughout the summer until C-TOPS (summer
program for admitted students). Once, I found myself back on campus my initial
response came back and I finally knew this was where I wanted to be in the
fall.
Now, as a senior I look back and wonder how I ever questioned whether to
attend school here at Carolina. I love being a Tar Heel and have quickly adjusted
to Carolina’s passion for basketball. I enjoy being involved in Dance
Marathon, Order
of the Bell Tower and serving as a campus
tour guide. I have
had many amazing experiences here and I am thankful that I had the strength
to give Carolina a chance.
