What
I wish I knew in 12th grade—
Study
for those AP/IB exams
Well,
well, well…here you are. Everyone telling you this is the
biggest decision you’ll ever have to make…kinda feels
like you’re standing on the edge of some black abyss and the
bridge across is clouded by fog—you know you can get there,
but you’re not quite sure how. I remember it all too well.
I’m
here to tell you that it’s ALL GOING TO BE OK I promise—and
you can come find me if it’s not. Things may not work out
exactly as planned, but you’ll end up where you’re supposed
to.
Just
a few points of advice, or things that at least I wish I had known
when I was in your shoes… STUDY for those AP /IB exams! UGH
I know they’re terrible, but you will be so happy you did
when you don’t have to register for classes that seem elementary
to you next year. Receiving good grades on these tests will give
you credit to whatever college you attend and will allow you to
plunge into classes you want to take, not just those you’re
required to take. Yeah, it’s your senior year, and you want
to slack a bit, but put forth the effort now when school isn’t
too incredibly tough; I promise it’s worth it.
Also,
RELAX. This is your last year at home and with those friends who
you’ll be parting with. Don’t get so worked up, and
don’t let all the pressure ruin your fun. Research the colleges,
pay attention, make ‘To Do’ lists, adhere to the deadlines-
structure your time well. Negotiate with your parents; tell them
how you feel when they won’t quit bugging you. Tell them I
told them to quit. I know it’s all really difficult to keep
up with, and there’s a lot on your plate, but don’t
lose sight of what lies ahead. Soon, the place that you call ‘home’
will be different; you won’t have those hometown friends to
hang out with every Friday, and everything will change.
So
you’re at this crossroads, and yeah, it’s huge. But
keep sight of your dreams and what you’re really putting yourself
through this hell for. Go with your gut instincts and you can’t
go wrong. If a certain college just feels right, it probably is.
Start looking ahead and over that giant abyss, and know that when
and wherever you’re ready to step across, the bridge will
be right underneath your feet.
