Choosing a Club
It seems that most every Carolina student is actively involved in the campus
community. With hundreds of student organizations and campus groups to choose
from, there is surely something for everyone. Being involved in a club allows
students to meet and interact with other students who share common interests.
Participating in a club also offers students leadership and networking opportunities.
Over the course of my career here at UNC, I have actively participated in
a wide range of campus organizations, and I have had phenomenal experiences
with each one. However, many students may initially feel overwhelmed with so
many campus groups to choose from. I too remember feeling this way during my
first year at Carolina.
My advice to any student entering UNC would be to take advantage of the many
student organization fairs that the university offers, such as those during
Week of Welcome (WOW), Pre-Orientation, and Fall Fest. Feel free to grab a
few brochures and sign up for a few listserves so that you can receive additional
information about particular organizations via email. Remember, you can always
opt to have your email address removed from the listserve if you decide that
you’re simply not interested. Also, attend interest meetings that the
organization may be hosting. Ask questions, talk to current members, and understand
the club’s goals.
Only make commitments to join the club(s) that you feel really excited about
and believe in. Don’t feel rushed or that you have to jump right into
anything. It is also extremely important to establish and maintain a good balance
between your academic, social, and extra-curricular pursuits.
Take your time, feel the campus out, and know that finding a club here at
UNC that you feel passionate about is such a rewarding experience.
