A
typical day in my life at Carolina
Hot
chocolate with extra whipped cream is definitely worth waking up
for. But then, so are most things around here.
I
like to start my day off with a visit to Strong's Coffee on Franklin
Street for my morning chocolate fix before heading off to class.
I pick up a copy of the Daily Tar Heel (DTH) along the way, scanning
the headlines as I walk. I also notice the guy who always wears
a t-shirt and jeans even when it’s below thirty degrees, the
three girls who carry their books in identical diaper bags, and
the attached-at-the-hip couple who have to kiss each other goodbye
in front of the Steele building every morning before they go their
separate ways for 75 minutes.
Even
though Carolina is a pretty big school, you definitely cross paths
with a lot of the same people on a very regular basis. I plop myself
into a desk and flip to the DTH crossword puzzle while I wait for
class to start. I usually don't put it down until I finish it, which
requires some work during the lecture, but we'll just let that stay
between you and me. College is all about multi-tasking.
After
classes, I go back to my house off Franklin Street, grab a PowerBar
and a banana, change my clothes, and stroll over to the track to
meet my team for practice. We stand around for a few minutes and
try to guess what today's workout will be before Coach arrives to
send us off on our warm-up. We jog the two mile loop around campus
and then come back to the track to stretch and mentally prepare
for pain. Workouts hurt. When they are over, however, everyone is
feeling pretty grateful to still be alive, and we jog the two mile
campus loop again to cool down, and then head over to the Kenan
weight room to lift for an hour or so.
By
the time we get through in there, it’s usually around 7 pm,
and I am HUNGRY! So it’s back to the house for a good solid
several hours of eating whatever I see and hanging out with my roommate.
Engaging in more multitasking, I tackle the homework as I eat further
courses of my rather large supper. Classics and Philosophy homework
consists of two things: reading and writing papers. Thus this is
what I do. Once I have gotten through the night's work, I try to
hit the hay. I'm pretty tired and sore at this point, but it has
been a good day.
