Never, not in a million, billion, trillion years, did I think I would ever end up at UNC-Chapel Hill. Not when I was growing up in Louisville, Kentucky. Not when I moved to Greenville, NC when I was 11 ½. Not when I was touring colleges in eleventh grade. Not even when I got accepted to UNC-CH in January of 2004 my senior year. Never, never, never.

When I was deciding on a university not too long ago, I didn’t want the college students to tell me their favorite food (chocolate), their career plans (professor of English and creative writing) or random, seemingly interesting facts about them (I am an Oprah fanatic, I am a morning person who likes eight hours of sleep a night, and my best friend is my identical twin sister).

This experience isn’t about us; in fact, we have it easy, we already know where we are meant to be. This experience is about YOU! And all I ever wanted anyone to tell me was that I didn’t have to be born knowing that I would go to Carolina. I deserved better than to be pressured or ‘convinced’ to go here. Just because so many other students go to UNC-CH, that didn’t mean I wasn’t special and unique. And I could be happy wherever I went – the experience would always be what I would make of it. So…

  • You don’t have to be born knowing that you will go to Carolina. (If you are, that makes it that much easier!) It’s okay to not know, even after you’ve decided where to go, whether it will ‘work out.’ Although it may say so on the forms you sign, college is never a final decision, but you won’t know for sure unless you give it a shot.
  • You shouldn’t be pressured or ‘convinced’ to go to any university, not by your friends, not by your high school, not by your parents, not even by yourself.
  • You are special and unique! There is no one else on this earth quite like you! Your distinct perspective and vision will be appreciated throughout your life, before, during, and long after college.
  • You can be happy no matter where you go – the experience really is what you make of it!

I didn’t think I would ever go to UNC-CH. And yet, here I am, so in love with this place that I am going to spend all the time I can sharing it with potential first-year students like you!

I want to help you make this decision easier for you than it was for me – even if you do not choose Carolina. For a long time, I didn’t think I would. But I know now that, although I may not be a North Carolinian by birth, I am a Carolinian at heart.

Best wishes in everything!

Megan
