A typical day in my life at Carolina

WARNING: I didn’t realize that my Thursdays were so BUSY; it’s a long letter, but it’s very interesting, trust Naite. (Take a minute, or three, to read it.) – ENJOY!

So, it’s Thursday morning, a little past 8:30, and I hear my alarm clock aggravating me for the second time, in only ten minutes. I’ve already hit it twice, and it just won’t seem to stop going off. I have to get up and get ready for my 9:30 Calculus II class. My roommate Ben and I scrimmage around the room looking for our day’s attire and make small talk as we listen to the weather man tell us the forecast. Finally, when we are both showered and dressed, we decide to make our way for the door. “Naite, you forgot your keys on the desk!” exclaims Ben. “Thanks Bro. I always seem to do that,” I reply. I rush to get my keys, and Ben says, “Lock the door dude, and I’ll see you tonight.” I make sure to turn off the television, lock the door, and make my way to class, I’m running a little late – it’s already 9:24 – Yikes!

I rush to class and try to guess my grade from the quiz I took the previous Tuesday. Finally, I make it to the classroom and look for my usual desk. Class hasn’t officially begun; Professor Lau is still passing out the quizzes. He hands me my quiz with a big smile – whew, I did okay, I tell myself. After the 75-minute lecture on differential equations, Taylor series, famous mathematicians, and integrals, I make my way to the UNC Book Store to pick up a morning snack and a magazine to occupy my time until my next class. On the way there, I see a group of my friends chilling in the Pit (The Pit is the popular hang out spot during the height of the afternoon). “Hey Naite, what’s up man?” asks one of my very close friends and AFAM 65 class buddies, Mike. “Not much brotha’, I’m happy about this math grade I just got back. What’s up with you?” I reply. We talk for a while, and a couple of us plan to meet for lunch around 1:00 – Yippee!

After picking up my GQ magazine and a yummy Lemon Poppy Seed muffin from the student stores, I make my way back to my North campus (Please Note: I live in a north campus dormitory, a luxury not had by many freshman). When I walk through that tall wooden door into 306 Grimes, which is adjacent to Davis Library, I notice that Ben has already made plans to chill for most of the day. He is lying on his bed and watching some T.V., so I make my way to our futon, and decide to watch a little T.V. with him. Soon, I find myself urging for a quick nap, so, I decide to take one until lunch. Next thing I know, I hear my cell phone going off, and it’s Mike, my friend from earlier, asking me where I’m at. I quickly tell him I’m coming, and rush to Lenoir Hall, Carolina’s cafeteria, to have a wonderful lunch full of laughs.

Once I make it to the busy second floor cafeteria, I search out for a group of wild and crazy kids – my friends. When I finally spot them, I make my way to the even busier lunch lines, and start filling up my tray. I make it back to the table, and there my friends and I eat, laugh, and joke with one another for the third time that week. After about 45 minutes of laughter, I remember that I have to walk to my geology class. I say goodbye to my friends, and make my way to Mitchell hall, home of Geological sciences.

Its 2:00, and I just claimed my seat in my geology 11 lecture among some of my other friends. There are around 144 people in this lecture, but fortunately, I have a second row seat. I listen to Professor Coleman apply plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes to our everyday lives with random jokes and constant metaphors – he’s such a great professor, my favorite one so far.

After another 75-minute lecture, I’m off to my final class for the day, African-American Studies 65 – Diaspora Art and Cultural Politics. This is a much smaller class, only around 18 students, and an entirely different atmosphere. We listen to our professor, Dr. Jordan, talk about the African-American culture and its assimilation into European middle class rankings. I take notes on random facts, hoping that they will assist me in studying for my upcoming test. Next thing I know, it’s time to go. That’s what I love about small lectures; you get so caught up in taking notes, the professor, and paying attention that you don’t have time to pay attention to time. LOL. Its 4:45 and I need to get back to my room.

I’m done with classes for the day, and I make my way back to my dorm room so I can change clothes and take a quick break. After putting on some jogging pants and a Carolina t-shirt, I sit at my desk and hop onto AOL Instant Messenger to talk with some of my friends via the Internet. I quickly see that I’ve spent over an hour talking on this evil computer (you’ll understand when you get here), and I tell my friends that I’ve GTG (computer terminology for got to go!).

I make my way to Lenoir Main Street to pick up my dinner at Chick-Fil-A and head to Carroll Hall for my Kaleidoscope meeting at 6:00. As usual, I’m a little late to the Fashion Magazine weekly meeting, so I slide into the back of the room and listen to our upcoming plans. Our winter issue is set to be released in less than three weeks. Yah!

Last planned activity for the evening, cONcEpt (of Colors) practice – my multicultural modeling troupe – at 7:00. I walk with another one of my friends, LaShaun, who is the president of my dance group, Opeyo! Male. We talk about our dance plans as we make our way to Woolen Gymnasium. Once we arrive, we listen to our president, Miranda, about an upcoming show we have. We begin to practice and joke around until practice is set to end around 9:00. Practice ends a little early, and I make my way back to my dorm room only to see that Ben is gone – he’s probably on Franklin Street getting ready to party. I take another shower, and crawl back onto my futon, where I plan to spend the rest of my night.

I’m happy that Thursday is over; it’s my busiest day of the entire week. I’m ready for Friday because I have nothing planned and only two 50-minute classes – Spanish 1 at eight o’clock, and English 11 at twelve. I get to take off my shoes, and relax my feet for the beginning of my weekend. I eventually get back onto my IBM ThinkPad Laptop computer and talk with my friends, on AOL Instant Messenger, until the wee hours of the morning. Who cares how late I stay up; I have nothing to do Friday. Boy, college is so much fun – especially your freshman year!

P.S.
Did any of you notice all of that free time, 11:00am until 2:00pm that I had to study, but instead, I decided to take a short nap, goof off, and have lunch with my silly friends? Word from the wise: use that time to Study, Study, Study. It’ll pay off in the end…Trust Naite!

P.P.S.
Just one more word to the wise...Instant Messenger is EVIL, be aware!
